My Top Leadership Tips: UK Global Talent Visa in Digital Technology

My Top Leadership Tips

I’ve been speaking to so many potential candidates in the last 12 months and there are some recurring themes that have resulted from my numerous conversations with them. The main one is:

Feedback from Assessors are getting more detailed and a common theme for unsuccessful decisions are not meeting or fulfilling the Mandatory Leadership Criteria.

One example of an Assessor’s feedback is

Typically, awardees evidence stronger leadership through a mixture of exceptional references from a wider network of established technology industry leaders that detail how, what, and why the candidate is a leader of their field; a wider array of significant media recognition; examples of high-profile speaking engagements or editorial engagements where the candidate is featured as a keynote or their unique knowledge be the primary subject of each article; exceptionally high compensation with respect to their peer group and employer’s country; and other forms of recognisable contributions that are celebrated in their own right of which the candidate is a validated author.

After careful review, we do not endorse this application. The primary reason is a lack of sustained national or international recognition as a leader of one’s field.

These conversations help me understand what is required to help applicants secure the Global Talent Visa. My top tips are:

Top Tip 1 – The Leadership criteria is a mandatory criteria which means an applicant must choose this criteria.  An applicant will score highly if they provide at least 3 pieces of evidence that shows sustained national or international recognition in their field.

Sustained means over a period of time. Therefore, an applicant would most likely score highly if they can show examples of leadership over a period of time. For example, one speaking engagement would not be “sustained”. However, speaking at more than one conference in their area of expertise over a period of time, i.e. in the last 5 years is more likely to show that they have a sustained recognition as a leader in their field because they have spoken at a number of events and being recognised as a leader to be speaking at these events or conferences.

Top Tip 2 – Being eligible is one thing, meeting the criteria, particularly the Mandatory Leadership Criteria requires detailed thought, action and a strategy to ensure an applicant can show sustained national and international recognition in their field, not only for work within their company but also their thought leadership to the industry.

Some applicants can show this as they have been active publicly in the digital technology sector in the last five years.  Some applicants can only show one or two examples while others cannot show any.  The good news is they can do something about it and that means setting short, intermediate and long term goals to actively meet the criteria. Setting goals is one thing, achieving them requires a strategy and action.

Top Tip 3 –  If you require support to fulfil the Leadership criteria, I have launched a new Leadership in Tech Course to help you focus on the leadership criteria BEFORE you start preparing your applications. My Leadership in Tech course is a structured curriculum that addresses the Mandatory Leadership Criteria for the UK Global Talent Visa.
